Education . Health . Independence

3 out of 10 people over 70 will fall this year.

50% of them wont get help in time.

Fall Aware can reduce falls by 30%. Help us help the aged today.

A fall in our older years is a very serious occurrence and can lead to life-threatening, debilitating physical and emotional problems, as well as costly medical expenses. With the correct interventions these can be avoided.

The Fall Aware programme enables elderly persons from all walks of life and all cultural backgrounds across South Africa to avoid the incidence of a fall. Through educating both elderly persons and the people that care for them, the Fall Aware programme empowers individuals through education and health, promoting safer habits, a more fulfilling quality of life and the greatest level of independence.

Our statistics show that 65% of emergency calls are received between 03h00 and 08h00 and 75% are related to a fall (TeleCare Solutions 2011)

The risk of falling increases with age.

The risk of falling is greater for women than for men.

Two-thirds of those who experience a fall will fall again within six months.

A decrease in bone density contributes to falls and resultant injuries.

Failure to exercise regularly results in poor muscle tone, decreased strength, and loss of bone mass and flexibility.

At least one-third of all falls in the elderly involve environmental hazards in the home.

The Fall Aware programe prevents falls in our aged population through providing:

Educational information provided to the elderly, care-workers and health-care practitioners (public and private sector) through printed material translated into the 11 official languages.

Weekly presentations and seminars delivered nationwide in South Africa.

Health-care interventions to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Structured Fall Awareness research and study involving qualified health-care practitioners and an established collaboration with Yale University (USA) which serves to enable deeper insight and increasingly improved interventions.

Whether you are able to provide services, funding or your time as a presenter, we would value your involvement with the Fall Aware programme. Contribute to your aged community today and help us prevent the pain and discomfort of fall. Through education and the promotion of better health, we can make a difference!
